A neurotoxin blocks the release of a substance called acetylcholine, that signals our body’s muscle to contract. As a result, the muscle group that was injected becomes weakened. This weakening leads to reduction in muscle movement and many times can completely inhibit the movement. In general, toxins help diminish the appearance of dynamic wrinkles (the ones that are formed from repetitive facial movements). It can help to soften the appearance of wrinkles that are present at rest.
Toxin is measured in units. Based on the area of treatment and the amount of movement will help to determine how many units that you will need. You and your provider can discuss what your goals are.

Botox®, Dyport®, and Daxxify® are all injectables that are neurotoxins that use botulinum toxin to reduce the muscle movement that causes wrinkles.
The differences between BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport, and Daxxify lie in their formulations and FDA indications. BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxin A) utilizes a protein from Clostridium botulinum. It has 3 FDA indicated areas: the glabella ( 11’s), crows’s feet (around the eyes), and the forehead.
Dysport (abobitulinumtoxin A), is also derived from botulinum toxin. It also has the same 3 FDA indicated areas.
Daxxify (daxibotulinumtoxin A) is unique in that it uses a small peptide exchange technology rather than delivering the toxin to the nerve cells. It has FDA indication for use for glabellar lines.
All of these products are used “ off label”, meaning not FDA indicated, to treat many areas of the face.
The onset for each neurotoxin can be different, but generally is between 2-10 days. Most people will get between 3-4 months between treatments, but can vary depending on different factors for individuals. For 50% of people, they may get up to 6 months duration with the use of Daxxify.
Neurotoxins are used to soften and reduce wrinkles/lines in the forehead, the glabella ( double 11’s), crows feet, bunny lines, jawline, neck lines – these injections can last up to 3-4 months. The effects of neurotoxins are seen within 2-10 days.
Dermal fillers are used to lift and fill out different areas of the face. The nasolabial folds (smile lines), soft smoker lines around the lips, create fuller lips, define cheeks and can create a sharper jawline. Dermal fillers can last up to 6-18 months depending on the area injected and which dermal filler was used.
Needles used for neurotoxins like Botox, Dysport, and Daxxify are extremely small; like the size of the needle that is used for insulin injections. That doesn’t mean it won’t hurt at all, but it means the pain will be minimized compared to an immunization or a flu shot. On request, we can ice the injection sites beforehand, which helps numb your soon-to-be-wrinkle free zones.
The effects of neurotoxin treatments typically become visible within three to seven days after treatment. However, individual results may vary, and it may take more than one treatment to achieve optimal results. We find that you will have your optimal results in 3 weeks.
Determining the number of neurotoxin units needed is a nuanced process influenced by various factors. The optimal unit count depends on the specific facial areas being treated, whether it’s an initial or repeat treatment, and the desired level of effect. For instance, addressing upper forehead lines may require eight to twenty units, while crow’s feet may necessitate even more units for a full treatment. Generally, if you are treating one area of the upper face, such as the forehead, you need to treat the glabella and eyes at the same time. The reason for this is, when you relax one area the other areas start to work harder (or recruit) and can make those areas wrinkle even more.
In terms of new versus repeat treatments, adjustments are made based on the patient’s previous experience. If a patient has been overly treated in the past ,we decrease units; conversely, if there has been too much movement, we may increase units. The desired level of movement and expression also plays a role, with fewer units injected for more movement and more units for a greater reduction in facial lines.
While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, it’s uncommon for a patient to require fewer than 50 units for all three popular treatment areas. Typically, we find optimal results with 50-65 units, but some cases may require 70 or more units for the desired outcome.
