There are several different types of dermal fillers. The most widely used filler in the United States is a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the body that helps maintain skin hydration and volume. When HA fillers are injected, they plump up the area that was injected. The effects are not permanent, but depend on the individual factors, the area of injection, and which HA filler that was used.

The majority of dermal filler treatments typically have a duration of nine to twelve months. To maintain year-round plumpness and structural enhancement in the lips, we may suggest additional booster touch up treatments every six months to a year. For those seeking more subtle results, replenishments on a yearly basis are recommended. Recognizing that each patient is unique, we customize these touch ups based on their individual aesthetic preferences and requirements.

As lip fillers are a non-surgical procedure, they involve no invasive surgery, cuts, or stitches on the lips. We apply numbing cream for 15 minutes to minimize injection discomfort. While most clients do not experience significant discomfort, some may feel slight pressure. Bruising, swelling, and/or redness can occur, but typically resolve within a few days (in some cases, it may take up to one week).
In some cases, lip filler patients may experience swelling in the lip area after having the treatment carried out. The amount of lip filler used on a patient can also have an impact on the risk of swelling occurring. This is a completely normal side effect of lip injections and can occur immediately or shows through one to two days following treatment. The first day following the injection is when you will have the most swelling and it will then begin to resolve. Allow two weeks to allow the filler to fully integrate with your own tissue. It is not uncommon to feel lumps and bumps in your tissue during that first 2 weeks. If lip swelling does occur, then patients can apply ice to the lips using an ice pack or an ice cube covered in cloth (so it doesn’t stick to the lip and cause pain). This will help ease any swelling, itching, bruising or pain that may occur as a result of the treatment.
As with many medical cosmetic treatments, it is not advisable to receive lip filler treatments while pregnant. Dermal fillers have not been tested or verified for safety and efficacy on pregnant patients, so there is no concrete evidence to support the safety of fillers in this group of patients.
Immediately. There is no medical reason why you cannot apply makeup including lip gloss, lip balm or lipstick directly after lip fillers. A treatment can leave the lips feeling slightly tender, so it is recommended that you leave it a day before applying makeup to the treatment area.
